Research Project

The research project is a very important aspect of MSc Epidemiology Postgraduate Online. Most of your time will be spent on your research project (56 ECTS).

The research project is an individual project which is conducted within a research theme of departments and institutes from Utrecht University (UU) or University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht). A staff member of Utrecht University, the UMC Utrecht or an affiliated institute will supervise the research project.  Research projects may cover a wide variety of topics such as human or veterinary infectious disease, cardiovascular disease, oncology, pharmacology, occupational health risks and many more topics of clinical or public health relevance. The projects may include fundamental or clinical based research. To start the research project, students need to write a research proposal which has to be approved by the program coordinator and the Board of Examiners. The research project is finished by an oral presentation and by writing a scientific paper, which in some cases results in publication of this scientific article.

Testimonials

review

''The program is fantastic. I especially like breadth of the course and the way we build on early concepts with more in depth analysis in later modules means you are always reinforcing your learning whilst still developing a deeper understanding of the principles and concepts of epidemiology, rather than simply how to perform set tasks. By having lectures that take these core concepts down to first principles, I feel we've gained a better grasp of the subject and can thus apply it to new problems to solve them!

The study of Epidemiology

Epidemiology has grown to be an indispensable asset for researchers, clinicians and practitioners. Far reaching in its impact. It is the foundation of evidence-based medicine for the individual patient and the cornerstone of public health policy for societies.

Epidemiology as a scientific discipline is an excellent option; for the doctor, who wishes to be armed with both biomedical knowledge and statistical wisdom when looking for the right patient care of their individual patient. Also for the public health professional, who faced with global health questions does not wish to lose sight of the impact for the individual. And for the veterinarian who is faced with challenges that play a national role yet must look at the impact on individual cases.
